Frank DeTrane, MD, FACG
Dr. Frank DeTrane is one of the founding members of Gastroenterology Associates of Fredericksburg and has been with the practice since 1995. He earned his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia in 1985, and completed his residency in Internal Medicine and Fellowship in Gastroenterology at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC.in 1992. Dr. DeTrane is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, and is a Diplomat with the National Board of Medical Examiners.
Dr. DeTrane has been active in directing the growth of Gastroenterology Associates to its current 20,000 square foot Digestive Center with the first AAAHC Certified Office Endoscopy unit in the Fredericksburg area that opened in 2008. Prior to that he served as Chairman of the Endoscopy Committee at Mary Washington Hospital for eight years and helped design and manage the Endoscopy Center at the hospital. He is Past-President of the Fredericksburg Medical Society and member of the American College of Gastroenterology, American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy,and the American Gastroenterological Association. Dr. DeTrane is proficient in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy including ERCP.
Dr. DeTrane's special interests include colon cancer prevention and GERD, and he has organized and participated in various public forums and grand rounds pertaining to these topics. He continually evaluates opportunities and new technologies that will provide the best GI care for the Fredericksburg area. In addition, he is committed to educating his patients about their medical conditions to enable them to make informed decisions about their treatment plan.
Dr. DeTrane enjoys spending family time with his wife and six children, trying to take advantage of all that this great community has to offer. Dr. DeTrane has been recognized as one of the region's top gastroenterologists by Northern Virginia Magazine every year since 2012.
Dong Lee, MD
Dr. Dong Lee joined Gastroenterology Associates of Fredericksburg after serving as the Director of the Gastroenterology Clinic at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and Certified in Gastroenterology. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in 1994 from the University of California at Berkeley, in California; and his Doctor of Medicine from the State University of New York at Brooklyn in 1998, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude
Dr. Lee was the head of the gastroenterology clinic at National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, which serves our nation's military and elite elected officials. He also served as an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Instructor of Medicine for the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences and was awarded the Prezemyslaw “Mac” Hirszel Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the Captain Colleen Counihan Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching. He also earned numerous Military Awards including the Army Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy/Marine Corp Achievement Medal; and various Service Ribbons including the Fleet Marine Force Ribbon, National Defense Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, and the Global War on Terrorism Ribbon.
Dr.Lee is proficient in the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures of colonoscopy, upper GI endoscopy, video capsule endoscopy, and high resolution manometry.
Dr. Lee is recognized as one of the region's top gastroenterologists by Northern Virginia Magazine in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 and 2018.
He enjoys spending time with his wife and twins during his free time.
Chetan Pai, DO
Dr. Chet Pai earned his medical degree at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, and completed a residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. In addition, he was selected among many applicants to do an advanced endoscopy fellowship (ERCP & EUS) at Henry Ford Hospital. Dr. Pai is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. He is the only one in the surrounding area that has had additional training (certified) to perform EUS. His areas of interest include therapeutic endoscopy (ERCP, EUS guided FNA, luminal stenting, endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR)), colon screening, GERD, liver disease, and diseases of the bile ducts and pancreas.
Dr. Pai is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology and the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Dr. Pai recently served as the Medical Director of The Endoscopy Treatment Center at Mary Washington Hospital. He is committed to educating patients about their illnesses to enable them to be active participants in their care.
Dr. Pai recently received his Master's of Business Administration from George Washington University and currently serves as the practice's Managing Partner. Dr. Pai resides in Stafford County with his wife and two daughters. His interests include boating, biking, and working out. He has been recognized as one of the region's top gastroenterologists by Northern Virginia Magazine in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.
Peter Wong, MD, FACP, FACG
Dr. Peter Wong joined Gastroenterology Associates of Fredericksburg in 2001 after serving as U.S. Army physician for nine years (retired as a Major). He is a Diplomat with the American Board of Internal Medicine and Certified in Gastroenterology. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in 1988 from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, VA, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. He earned his Doctorate from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 1992. He is a Fellow in the American College of Physicians and American College of Gastroenterology.
Dr. Wong has held several Faculty positions in Gastroenterology, is well published in the area of Gastroenterology and has earned numerous awards in research and academia. He has been a podium speaker of his research studies in National Meetings. He was awarded many medals during his service in the U.S. Army including the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Achievement Medal, NATO Medal, Commendation Medal and the National Defense Service Award.
Dr. Wong is proficient in the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures of Colonoscopy, Upper GI Endoscopy (EGD), Endoscopic Band Ligation, Esophageal Dilation, and Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). His special interests are Gastroesophageal reflux disease, esophageal motility disorders and liver diseases.
Dr. Wong currently serves as the Medical Director of the Endoscopy Treatment Center at Mary Washington Hospital. He was recognized as one of the region's top gastroenterologists by Northern Virginia Magazine in 2016.
Dr. Wong is active in his church, enjoys swimming, jogging, Tai Kwon Do (black belt) as well as spending time with his wife and two children. He is a passionate classical musician. He is an accomplished violinist in the community as 1st violinist of the Spotswood Baptist Church, Mary Washington Philharmonic Orchestra, Rappahannock Pops Symphony and the Rappahannock String Quartet. He has played with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.
Jayme Tishon, MD
Dr. Jayme Tishon joined Gastroenterology Associates of Fredericksburg in 2012 and is proud to be the first female gastroenterologist practicing in Fredericksburg. Dr. Tishon is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. She earned her medical degree from the George Washington University where she graduated with honors and was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha, a medical honors society. She also completed both her internship and residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Gastroenterology & Hepatology at GW as well.
Dr. Tishon's clinical interests include acid peptic disorders, colon cancer prevention, anorectal disorders such as hemorrhoids and incontinence as well as women's issues in gastroenterology.
Dr. Tishon is proficient in the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures of upper endoscopy (EGD), enteroscopy, colonoscopy, and small bowel video capsule endoscopy as well as hemorrhoidal banding. She is member of the American College of Gastroenterology as well as the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
She lives in Northern Virginia with her husband. In her free time, she enjoys knitting, hiking, cycling and scuba diving.
Radha Menon, MD
Dr. Radha Menon joined Gastroenterology Associates of Fredericksburg in 2012. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. She earned her medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine (formerly known as MCP Hahnemann University) in 2005, and this is also where she completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Gastroenterology & Hepatology. She had the distinguished honor of serving as one of four chief medical residents for a large internal medicine residency program from 2008-2009.
Dr. Menon has several clinical interests: patient education, colon cancer screening, gender-related issues in gastroenterology, and patient safety during endoscopic procedures. During fellowship, she was instrumental in helping her division to make an informational patient video for colonoscopy and colon cancer screening. In addition, as one of two main clinical investigators, she worked closely with Drexel University's biomedical engineers to study a new device which monitors optimal levels of sedation during colonoscopy.
Dr. Menon is proficient in the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures of colonoscopy, upper GI endoscopy (EGD), and video capsule endoscopy.
During her free time, Dr. Menon loves to cook, enjoys traveling, and spending quality time with her husband and sons.
Narayan Dharel, MD, Ph.D
Dr. Narayan Dharel joined Gastroenterology Associates of Fredericksburg after completing a fellowship in Gastroenterology and Transplant Hepatology at Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Dharel completed his Residency Training at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in New York.
Dr. Dharel is proficient in the diagnositic and therapeutic procedures of upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, video capsule endoscopy, high resolution manometry and esophageal pH monitoring. With his additional training in transplant hepatology, Dr. Dharel also offers special expertise in the management of chronic liver disease including cirrhosis, viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease (NASH) and pre- and post-liver transplant care. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology and Transplant Hepatology.
Dr. Dharel has been deeply involved in academic research in the field of hepatology, has presented in numerous national and international meetings and has been well published.
Dr. Dharel is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association, American College of Gastroenterology, and American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.
Akash Ajmera, MD
Dr. Ajmera joined Gastroenterology Associates of Fredericksburg in June 2019. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency at Cooper University Hospital, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and his Gastroenterology Fellowship at Georgetown University Hospital. Upon completing his training he worked for five years at Marshall University/Cabell Huntington Hospital in West Virginia, where he was appointed Chief of Gastroenterology.
Dr. Ajmera is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. In addition to performing diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, Dr. Ajmera is skilled in performing multiple advanced therapeutic interventions including endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), endoscopic luminal stenting and radiofrequency ablation (RFA). These advanced therapies enable Dr. Ajmera to provide leading-edge treatment of conditions such as early stage GI cancer, stricture or compression of the GI tract and Barrett's esophagus.
In his free time Dr. Ajmera enjoys traveling, yoga, snowboarding and crossfit.
Monica Spellman, PA-C
Monica Spellman changed her career path from 10 years of Physical Therapy in New Hampshire to Physician Assistant in 1996 when she graduated from Hahnemann University, Philadelphia, PA, and became Board Certified. She practiced family medicine, urgent care and workers compensation medicine at a private pract
ice in Pennsylvania for 11 years, where she was also part of the adjuvant staff at Drexel University as a physical diagnosis lab instructor. She was awarded Physician Assistant of the Year for student teaching from Drexel University in 2007, and has been active in precepting Physician Assistants for most of her career.
Monica moved to Virginia after taking nearly a year off to travel and settled into Gastroenterology Associates of Fredericksburg in November of 2007. She works closely with each physician, helping to improve access to care at our very busy practice. Her job encompasses taking the patient history, performing the physical examination and educating the patient with regard to whatever testing the Physician may have ordered. She also takes great interest in helping patients learn how to adjust their diet to improve their GI symptoms.
Monica is actively involved in her church. She and her husband enjoy the outdoors immensely, rain or shine. Her oldest grown son is an EMT and her youngest is a Helicopter mechanic in the Army.
Kirstin Garcia, PA-C
Kirstin Garcia is a board certified Physician Assistant. She was raised in Lancaster, PA and received a B.A. in Sociology from the University of Pennsylvania. After working several years as a case manager in Older Adult Protective Services she changed her career course. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Touro College in New York with a B.S. in Physician Assistant Studies in 2000. Later she earned a Masters in Physician Assistant Studies from the University of Nebraska.
Kirstin started her Physician Assistant career serving in the Unites States Navy. She spent her first three years providing medical care in the Family Medicine Clinic at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. Her next tour of duty took her to the Family and Military Medicine Clinics at Naval Clinic Quantico in Quantico, VA. During her military career she organized a sick- call screener educational program for Navy Hospital Corpsmen. She was also a member of two multidisciplinary teams dealing with domestic violence and substance abuse.
Her first position as a Physician Assistant in the private sector was with us here at GAF. She returns to us after practicing four years in a local Internal Medicine office. She works with all of the physicians in both the outpatient and inpatient settings. Her role is to obtain the patient history and perform the physical examination, then together with the physician devise the evaluation and treatment plan. She greatly enjoys working in a team environment.
She resides in Fredericksburg with her husband, Luis. She enjoys DIY projects, working outdoors and traveling.
Denise Hamilton, PA-C
Denise Hamilton received her undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Mary Washington. While pursuing her major coursework, Denise began working in the emergency department at Mary Washington Hospital. Upon completion of her degree, she attended Bethel University in Tennessee where she received her Master's in Physician Assistant studies. Denise brings a range of experience to her practice with Gastroenterology Associates of Fredericksburg including over a year caring for acute patients as a PA in Mary Washington Healthcare's three emergency departments.
Stephanie Guerra, PA-C
Stephanie Guerra joined Gastroenterology Associates of Fredericksburg in 2017after completing her Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, TN. As a student, she was awarded the Faculty Award for outstanding clinical phase student and received a scholarship. Before her time at CBU, Stephanie received her Bachelor of Science degree from Southern Wesleyan University in Central, SC and spent several years working as a physical therapy tech at Orthopedic & Sports Physical Therapy here in Fredericksburg. Her clinical experience includes internal medicine, orthopedics, pediatrics, general surgery, and ICU, among others. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, traveling and DIY projects.
Vicki Watson, ANP, DNP
Vicki Watson joined Gastroenterology Associates of Fredericksburg in September of 2017 after spending 14 years at Pratt Medical Center where she worked closely with gastroenterologist Dr. Farrukh Jafri until his retirement in 2017. Vicki's extensive experience in the field of Gastroenterology prepared her well for her position with Gastroenterology Associates of Fredericksburg, where she supports all of the physicians with the care and management of their patients.
Vicki has a particular interest in the treatment of liver disease and works closely with Dr. Narayan Dharel in the management of patients with Hepatitis C and other diseases of the liver. Vicki helps to facilitate the care of patients requiring routine screening colonoscopies by providing their pre-procedure evaluations as needed. Vicki also helps to accommodate patients needing to be seen sooner than their usual physician's schedule allows. Whether working independently or side-by-side with a physician, Vicki communicates daily with the physicians about their patients and pulls physicians into consult with patients as needed.
Vicki holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from George Mason University, which she obtained in 2016. She became certified as an Adult Nurse Practitioner in 2001 after completing her Master of Science in Nursing at George Mason University. She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Howard University.
