Monica Spellman changed her career path from 10 years of Physical Therapy in New Hampshire to Physician Assistant in 1996 when she graduated from Hahnemann University, Philadelphia, PA, and became Board Certified. She practiced family medicine, urgent care and workers compensation medicine at a private practice in Pennsylvania for 11 years, where she was also part of the adjuvant staff at Drexel University as a physical diagnosis lab instructor. She was awarded Physician Assistant of the Year for student teaching from Drexel University in 2007, and has been active in precepting Physician Assistants for most of her career.
Monica moved to Virginia after taking nearly a year off to travel and settled into Gastroenterology Associates of Fredericksburg in November of 2007. She works closely with each physician, helping to improve access to care at our very busy practice. Her job encompasses taking the patient history, performing the physical examination and educating the patient with regard to whatever testing the Physician may have ordered. She also takes great interest in helping patients learn how to adjust their diet to improve their GI symptoms.
Monica is actively involved in her church. She and her husband enjoy the outdoors immensely, rain or shine. Her oldest grown son is an EMT and her youngest is a Helicopter mechanic in the Army.
